estate planning takes away some of the hard decisions

Estate planning gives you a chance to make important decisions in advance. By doing so, you save your loved ones a lot of frustration and heartache – and a lot of time and money, as well. For this reason, we often tell our clients that, even if they can’t bequeath a great deal of wealth, the act of estate planning itself is a great gift they can give their families.

It’s also important to remember that some estate planning tools that involve making important decisions in advance, such as powers of attorney, advance health care directives and guardianship and conservatorship appointments, can go into effect during our clients’ lives, protecting them should they later become unable to make these decisions themselves.

understanding probate and estate administration

Probate is the process through which a deceased person’s estate is legally passed on to the person’s heirs. The process is simpler, faster and less expensive when the person has prepared a will and other estate planning documents. However, even with an estate plan, the process can be difficult for an executor who has little experience with the issues involved, especially when loved ones are still actively grieving their loss.

We help people administer estates and move them through probate – which involves gathering an inventory of the estate assets and property, paying taxes and outstanding debts, communicating with the probate court, filing paperwork and checking that deadlines are met – so that their wishes are fulfilled and their property is protected.
